ideas for a vegan dinner party !
So, I know Christmas 2018 is already over and I haven’t provided you with much ideas for it, but since NYE is just around the corner, I thought it’d still be relevant to tell you about the vegan food we prepared and ate out our Christmas dinner this year!
This blogpost is going to highlight all the food, although not necessarily providing you with a recipe for everything because of various reasons (some recipe come from my ebook TheMindfulLife, other people’s book & some food was prepared by my sister !). However, I hope it will still be useful for your creative mind!
I celebrated Christmas with my sister and brother-in-law (well they’re not married but u get it lol) like we’ve done for the last 2 years now, except this year was really just the 3 of us. My sister, Camille, isn’t vegan (no one in my family is) but she’s eating plant-based the majority of the time - like if she has a veggie and a meat option she will take the veggie. My brother in law, Fernando, is not vegan, not vegetarian, not plant-based haha. I’m pretty sure he’s decreased his meat/animal-product consumption over the past months/years and is happy eating vegan food too, but not for Christmas (yet ;)). And since this is a celebration to make everyone happy, it’s obvious we’d let everyone chose what they wanted to eat (understand, he had his own piece of meat and we had our little tempeh!).
I’m gonna break down this blog post following the dinner course !
For apetizer I made two types of hummus. One chickpea, the one from my ebook TheMindfulLife, and one red kidney bean, with tahini, paprika, garlic powder, salt and lemon. I also made my smoked paprika sour cream which is always a big winner every time I make it ! I’ve already shared the recipe for it on my youtube channel but here’s a little reminded: 1 cup cashews, soaked, 1.5 tablespoon paprika, 1/2 tsp salt, 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar, half lemon (juice), 1 cup of bell peppers + 1 shallot (sautéed). Blend everything and add splashes of water until you get a smooth consistency ! With all that we had some raw veggies sticks, always a good option!
Then my sister and I made vegan blinis (they’re best made last minute), which I will share the recipe for very soon on instagram! They are such a great option for entrée, toasting presentation or even plain ! We spread a vegan pâté i’ve made with soaked cashews & sunflower seeds, nutritional yeast, salt, dill & pepper and a squeeze of lemon juice (I can’t really give you the exact quantities, sorry!)
Finally, I made the buffalo wings from my friend Alice Esmeralda Vegan recipe book, they are seriously to DIE for !
My sister made couple of others non vegan appetisers which you can probably see on some photos.
For the main dish, my sister was in charge of it. It was easy to make the swap for vegan recipes (in fact, everyone had the same thing except Fernando cooked his own meat and we had tempeh, and I had my purée with olive oil instead of butter).
I prepared and cooked the tempeh, which I had marinated 24hours in cubes, with tamari, sesame oil, thai spices, ginger, orange juice, maple syrup, and caramelized on a pan.
My sister prepared white and purple potatoes purée, mini squash & slivered almonds roasted with hazelnut oil (if i remember well!), cooked apple & pecans with black pepper, and a sour cranberry sauce she made out of fresh cranberries. It was so good (despite being slightly full already!).. but I unfortunetly forgot to take a photo of the final product.. here’s a photo of my sister adding the white purée on top of purple with a snowflake cookie cutter :)
Dessert was made by moi (first time we got a vegan dessert for everyone! yay!). I went for an orange & chocolate vegan raw cake and you can find the recipe for it in my previous post right here.
Hope this blog post has given you a little inspiration for your future dinners!
I would love to know what you ate for Christmas this year !!
Let me know in the comments below !!
Lots of love,
